The Daily Meal shares the scoop on the best places to buy gifts in Salt Lake, for anyone on your list.
The Kids- Take the time to visit JouJou, one of the greatest toy stores you’ll find just about anywhere. This little shop is located in The Grand America Hotel, which was built to handle the influx of visitors to the 2002 Salt Lake Olympics. JouJou might be small but they have unique puzzles, wooden toys, books, tutus, and more, that will please your kids. Plan to spend more time browsing then you think you’ll need, grownups will be equally enchanted by the displays, as the children will be by their gifts.
The Sweetheart- There is no better gift for your sweetheart then chocolates or other confections. La Bonne Vie, meaning the good life, is a charming little bakery also located in The Grand America Hotel. The beautiful multi-colored macaroons or other little treats will absolutely delight. It probably wouldn’t hurt to bring back something for your sister too.
The Boss- Take a short trip to Park City, about 20 minutes outside of Salt Lake. Enjoy the gorgeous views on the drive up and stop for lunch at the High West Distillery and Saloon. In addition to a juicy monster burger and fun lunch cocktails, you can pick up a bottle of the fine whiskey distilled right on site. This is a gift that will be sure to put you in the bosses good graces when you get back from vacation.
The Foodie- Obviously the best gift for any foodie, is food. Tony Caputo’s Market is just the place to go. The bastion of Italian cooking has wonderful dry goods like handmade pastas, oils and vinegars imported from Italy, and a gigantic selection of chocolates made with eclectic ingredients. You’ll find the perfect gift here for anyone who loves to eat or cook.
The Fashionista- Modern Family’s Ty Burrell has partnered with the Barnard family to bring back Salt Lake’s favorite boutique, The Chalk Garden Co-op. This unique shop has everything: designer clothes, vintage style bags, and other shiny little treasures that will delight your family fashionista. You’ll have fun shopping too as you discover fun quirks about the place as you browse. For example, Chalk Garden is housed in a former bank building with the old vaults acting as dressing rooms.
Just About Everyone- For pretty much anyone and everyone on your shopping list it’s a pretty safe bet to visit the City Creek shopping center. This mixed use space houses both trendy apartments and retail. Plenty of your favorite stores are at City Creek including: Nordstrom's, Michael Kors, Apple, and Tiffany's. You’ll have a pleasant shopping experience walking beside the creek running through the building. You can also shop rain or shine thanks to a retractable glass roof, that can be left open or closed as needed.

Salt Lake City, Utah Gift Baskets
Salt Lake City, Utah is known as the "Genealogy Capital of the World" because of its position as a world center for research in genealogy. As the capital of Utah, Salt Lake City is popularly known for being bordered by the famous Great Salt Lake, a lake with so much salt content that heavy items often float when they would normally sink! The city's population was estimated at around 179,894 in a 2003 census.
History of Salt Lake City
The original campsites of Salt Lake City were formed in 1847. Among those who arrived was a well-known man named Brigham Young, who brought a group of 147 pioneers to the valley. The members of his group were part of the early Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (also called Mormons). Plans were drawn for what then was called Great Salt Lake City, named for the vast salty lake. The city was ruled by a high council until 1848, when gold was discovered in California. Trading and supplying livestock and crops to traveling gold seekers became a way of life for the residents.
Salt Lake City was incorporated as the City of Great Salt Lake in 1850. A mining industry started in 1863 when lead and silver were discovered at Bingham Canyon. Also, around this time the name was officially changed to Salt Lake City. The city grew and grew, and in the 1900s it began to take on the characteristics it has today. Many local residents worked on improving the city and making it beautiful during the early 1900s.
As the population grew, so did the industries. Today, Salt Lake City is a popular tourist attraction and an unique place to live. The 2002 Olympic Winter Games were hosted there as well. Nearby cities include North Salt Lake, Woods Cross, Bountiful, Centerville, Riverton and Kaysville.
Shopping and Entertainment
A center for shopping, dining and entertainment in Salt Lake City is the Gateway (http://www.shopthegateway.com/). The Gateway resembles a small village of shops, sidewalks with lamp posts, and even accompanying residential buildings. Concerts, festivals and educational presentations are held here.
Visiting Salt Lake City
Those touring the city will enjoy the historic downtown area where Salt Lake City's history comes to life in almost every building. There are 58 historic buildings, each with a story to tell. The Utah Museum of Fine Arts is a great place for art lovers to visit during their stay.
One of the most popular buildings in Salt Lake City is Temple Square, a stunning six-spired temple that is the heart of Mormon religion. The Joseph Smith Memorial Building is another renowned site. Inside are two restaurants, a movie theater and several banquet halls.
Tourists also flock to see the Great Salt Lake, a 20,000 square-mile lake and wildlife refuge where millions of birds migrate each year. It is the second saltiest lake in the world. For the family, a fun place to visit in Salt Lake City is Utah's Hogle Zoo (http://hoglezoo.org/). The zoo has many animals from Africa, Europe, Asia, North and South America. These include the cheetah, African lion, elephant, giraffe, Siberian tiger and more!

These 9 Utah Soda Shops Will Quench Your Thirst In The Best Way Possible
Many Utahns don’t drink alcohol…but that doesn’t mean they don’t love a good mixed drink. Soda shops have popped up all over the state in the last several years, and they’re incredibly popular. These aren’t the old-fashioned soda shops that your grandparents knew and loved. These are drive-through shops that make confections of soda (such as Coke, Diet Coke and Dr. Pepper), blended with flavored syrup and fruit juice.
The original few soda shops started the trend to offer frosted sugar cookies with the sodas – just in case a soda with added sugary syrup wasn’t enough sugar and calories for patrons. The trend continues still, and shops have expanded to include other snacks such as pretzels, donuts, cake, cupcakes and even french fries.
Some people are so crazy for this stuff that they get a large 32 or even 46-ounce drink every day (sometimes in the morning, on their way to work). KUTV news reported on Utah’s soda shops last fall, and interviewed one woman who claimed to have consumed more than 2,000 drinks in one year! Here are nine of Utah’s favorite soda shops, but please note that these are listed ALPHABETICALLY – they are NOT rated.

Blox Dessert Bars
There is a new dessert bar spot in Pleasant Grove – Blox Dessert Bars. They are ushering in the brownie revolution. Move over cookies – it’s dessert bars’ turn to be your late-night go-to sweet. Brownies a la mode, PB and chocolate, Lemon bars, carrot cake bars, pistachio bars, oh my!
Penny Ann’s Cafe & Mr. Charlie’s
Pure sweet treats not your mom’s or wife’s thing? Give her the gift of balance! I’m talking about chicken and waffles. The marriage of Penny Ann’s Cafe and Mr. Charlie’s is a beautiful thing for us in Utah. Usually, you only go to a place that specializes in chicken and the waffle turns out meh. Or you go to a breakfast place that can’t do fried chicken right. Having a combo that does both well is a game-changer.
Blox Dessert Bars is located at 541 S 500 E Ste. A, American Fork, UT 84003
Mr. Charlie’s Chicken is located at 554 W 4500 S Murray, UT 84123

Salt Lake Souvenir & Gift is a family owned and operated local business in the heart of downtown. We have a rich family history in retail, and are currently in our third generation of owning retail gift stores. Martin Dalebout opened the first store in 1970. His store was known for its awesome window displays, great variety of product, and fabulous customer service. His son Jerry grew up in the business and, along with his wife Colette, opened their own store in 1994. The store was downtown in the former Crossroads Mall – very close to where Salt Lake Souvenir & Gift is currently located. Jerry was among the very first to notice the needs of tourists in Salt Lake City and emphasized providing a great selection of souvenirs for visitors to take home to their families. In 2016, their daughter Amber (who also grew up in the business) began to take the reigns and has brought the businesses to new heights.
We are so excited to have our second location on Capitol Hill and work with our great state to run the Utah Visitor Center gift shop for Salt Lake City. Our family is committed to serving visitors any way we can. We are avid outdoorsman who enjoy sharing and giving suggestions about our incredible state! We are so happy to still be carrying on Martin’s legacy all these years later, ever expanding & constantly striving for excellence.
